5 Tips To Stay Safe On A Moped
Mopeds are the best of both worlds: they are lightweight and maneuverable like a bicycle but also speedy and traffic worthy like a motorcycle. Mopeds are also environmentally friendly, using far less fuel and emitting fewer toxins into the air. While you are enjoying the convenient, economical ride, always practice these safety tips. They can keep you alive on dangerous roadways.
1. Use your safety equipment properly. Use a DOT approved helmet and protective clothing at all times. The difference in sliding 10 feet with no sleeves and sliding the same distance with a jacket on is tremendous. The rider with protective sleeves is likely to go home, but the rider with no sleeves could require skin grafts.
2. Abide by all traffic laws. In a small, maneuverable vehicle it is sometimes tempting to scoot around slow traffic and congested areas. Resist the temptation. Even if another driver waves you around, never assume it is safe to go. Make a complete stop at stop signs and look both directions before proceeding. Never try to beat a yellow light and always respect designated lanes going the proper direction.
3. Stay alert. It is far easier for you to see cars and trucks on the road than it is for them to see you. Use your directional signals, and in low visibility use hand signals in addition to directional signals. Use caution around big trucks, because they have the lowest visibility of any other vehicle on the road. Sometimes it is not a matter of other drivers being discourteous to you, it is just a matter of their limited visibility on the roadway.
4. Be a defensive driver. Never assume the other drivers are going to do what they are supposed to do. Always be on the lookout for people who run stop signs, try to beat yellow lights and use the shoulder to skirt around congested traffic. Drive for your own safety as well as the safety of those around you.
5. If there is an accident, wait patiently at the scene and answer all of the responding officer’s questions. Bike riders of all types have a poor reputation among law enforcement as well as the general public. Part of your responsibility is to change public perception by behaving courteously and responsibly, even when an accident has occurred. Besides, if the officer does not have your side of the story, all he has to base his report on is the testimony of the other driver.
