Different Styles of Jeans Explained
It used to be easy to buy a classic pair of jeans that would see you through wind and rain, long days at work, active party nights and leisurely weekend strolls. These days, however, shops offer so many different styles and cuts, some formal and some less so, leaving us, consumers, struggling to understand the differences and whether or not it’s what you’re looking for. This short guide aims to bust that confusing jeans jargon and make your next shopping spree much easier.
Boot Cut
The boot cut style is tight in the thigh area but flares out towards the ankles. This kind of jeans is often advertised as appropriate for work and social occasions. Boot cuts don’t usually come in ripped, torn or frayed versions but can be jewelled or dyed.
Straight Leg
Straight leg jeans are literally made in a straight cut and neither flare nor taper along the length of the leg. The style is a popular choice for laidback office workers and people looking for comfortable weekend-wear.
Bell Bottom
Bell bottoms are a relic from the 60s and 70s when they were popular in the hippie community. The style is tight-fitting to the knee and then gradually flares out into a very wide cut around the ankles, resembling the shape of a bell.
Skinny and Cigarette
The Skinny is a tight and fitted cut of jeans. This kind of trousers often contains lycra for added stretch and comfort. Skinny jeans are particularly popular among teenagers and people in their twenties. Many people associate the jeans with bands and the so-called hipster community.
Cigarette jeans are only different in that they are a little less tight-fitting around the ankles and so tend to bunch up a bit in the area. The punk community is said to appreciate this style.
Baggy and Loose Fit
Both styles are the opposite of skinny jeans, and are designed keeping comfort in mind. Baggy jeans have a tendency to look very informal so in most cases aren’t considered appropriate for work unless you’re lucky enough to work in a very laidback environment and aren’t in a client-facing role. People wear the trousers to slouch around in.
Boyfriend
Boyfriend jeans are essentially just baggy jeans made for girls. The name is a marketing trick for the style that’s meant to copy what you’d look like if you’d borrowed a pair of trousers from your other half.
Capri and Cropped
Capri is a cropped style. The jeans are cut off just after the knee or mid-calf. Simply cropped jeans are usually cut off just above the ankle. These jeans can be worn similarly to skinnies.
